RM60mil project to rehabilitate Tioman

TIOMAN: Teluk Tekek, the main gateway to this island resort is losing ground, as the bay is facing serious coastal erosion.

Up to 20m of the shoreline in some parts has been washed away and in recent years the beach has come under attack from river pollution, which has contaminated the sea and parts of the beach.

Pahang Drainage and Irrigation Department director Datuk Tan Jiak Kim said the northern tip of the beach, near the Marine Parks building, was on the verge of collapse.

This, he said had prompted the DID to step in with measures to rehabilitate the 3km stretch of beach. Plans are afoot to undertake a RM60mil project, to be carried out over two and a half years, to rehabilitate four rivers along the stretch of beach and to fill the eroded stretches with sand.

He have already carried out an environmental impact assessment for the rehabilitation programme in Tioman and obtained the approval to proceed in 2002.

However, before we proceed, we want to seek feedback from related government agencies and also the villagers in Tioman,?he said. Tan however, said that there could be a snag to the plan.

He said the success of the rehabilitation project could be compromised if other large construction projects along the coast of Tioman, such as the proposed airport and marina project, were to proceed.

The impact of these other projects could jeopardise the success of our rehabilitation project as it could bring sediment and silt onto the beach.

Hoastal areas are very sensitive and can be affected by any change brought about by development elsewhere,?he said.

Tan said all the four rivers along the bay were highly polluted by improperly treated sewage from houses and resorts, rubbish and boat repair activities.

There is a lack of sewage treatment and solid waste disposal systems here ?a problem which will be addressed under the rehabilitation project.

JOHOR BARU
RM6m clean-up of polluted Sg Skudai Wednesday, 15 August 2001

The Danish Government with the co-operation of a local company will carry out the pu-rification work of the polluted Sungai Skudai here under a joint venture programme through the Danish Cooperation for Environment and Development (Danced), the Jo-hor Government will bear half of the RM6 million, needed to carry out programmes to prevent pollution and enhance water quality of the river.

Known for its reputation in environmental control, Danced will take a year to identify the pollutants; ascertain the cause of pollution and formulate control measures for the river. Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said there is a need to import Danish technology to restore the river from further pollution as the body had the expertise to handle the job.

"Danced has long been involved in environmental management. It had funded the Ma-laysia government and provided the technology during the Seventh Malaysian Plan on river and national park management, among others.

"Through this programme, Danced will draft out a Sungai Skudai management plan which will serve as the blueprint for the programme," he told reporters today. Earlier, Ghani witnessed the signing of memorandum of understanding between Danced, through its Malaysian company Asia Water and Environment Sdn Bhd, and Danga Bay Sdn Bhd.

Studies showed that Sungai Skudai is among the four most polluted rivers in Johor. The other three are Sungai Segget, Sungai Tukang Batu and Sungai Air Baloi. Sungai Skudai had been polluted by both domestic wastes and industrial discharge especially ammonia nitrogen all these years.
Ghani said there is a need to seriously look into the issue of environmental impact caused by development.
"We have to seek a balance between development and protection of our water re-sources. This is to minimise any negative impact to the environment." The Johor gov-ernment will step up efforts to ensure a concerted policy in river management," he added.
